Christmas Story Blurb

Here is the unofficial blurb for Every Time a Bell Rings, my little Christmas story from MLR Press, tentatively scheduled for December 23rd:

Brian dropped everything last year when his mother became ill so he could take care of her until the day she died. People he thought were friends didn’t stick with him and he’s somehow become kind of a recluse without meaning to be. Only Mike, his best friend since they were kids, has stuck by him and is now saving him from homelessness after a fire destroys Brian’s apartment building days before Christmas. Though Mike has to go down South for the holiday, Brian stays in Mike’s apartment with his slightly singed kitten Oreo. Brian’s only goal is to set his affairs back in order before everything shuts down for the holidays and then make it through those holidays in one piece. He’s lost so much–his only real possession is a photo album of his mom that he risked death to save from the fire–and he’s feeling lost and very alone…until Mike, his hot neighbor Trent, and even little Oreo conspire to give Brian the best Christmas possible and a future that looks a lot brighter.

IMHO :) this is a bittersweet, sometimes funny, and definitely sexy short story. Just explaining the significance of the photo album and what Trent does with one of the photos for Brian had my mother crying! There are some funny bits too, though–I hope!–as well as a few antics from a spunky kitten that any cat lover should recognize from their own furry friends.

Why I’ll Attend GayRomLit 2012

I didn’t attend GayRomLit this year to increase my readership or “get my name out there”, though I’m sure my publishers would like it if that happened. No, I went because writing can get lonely and it’s especially so when you find yourself getting that look after saying you write gay erotic romance. So attending GRL was this amazing opportunity to be surrounded by people who hear that news and smile, squeal, clap, and who actually ask my name and what I’ve written. Then to have them squeal again because they love My Summer of Wes? I’m still grinning about that.

The best part of this event, for me, was hanging out with a great mix of new and established authors and seriously enthusiastic readers. Sure, we talked books and characters and half of us were giggling over meeting each other in person. But I also spent hours in the lobby or by the pool chatting about life experiences, getting and giving advice, sharing hugs, and making or renewing friendships.

That’s why I’ll attend GayRomLit 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the Hard Rock Resort and Spa from October 18-21, 2012. I hope to see you there! :)

Ladies Don’t Write Sex Scenes

Every now and then, I dust off and read an actual paperback written by Jennifer Crusie when I need a break or a laugh or something with a dog in it. This time it was Welcome to Temptation, and a passage struck me as very interesting and true. The heroine, Sophie, is attempting to write a sex scene for use in a movie, but she keeps deleting the scene and rewriting it. Then she realizes why:

The problem was trying to write a love scene and stay a lady at the same time. It wasn’t possible. The minute you started thinking that writing sex was cheap and disgusting, your mind froze up and you wrote boring dreck. It was sort of like having sex. You either threw everything you had into it, or it wasn’t worth the bother.
–Sophie Dempsey, Welcome to Temptation

Of course, Sophie gets to solve that problem by “accidentally” telling Mayor Phineas T. Tucker to fuck her, gets exactly what she asked for, and then writes like every muse on the planet’s behind her. Not all of us have that kind of available inspiration, but I do believe we have to throw ourselves into our sex scenes with every bit of gusto we’ve got. There is, after all, no faking it in fiction.

So, my fellow authoresses, stop being a lady and embrace your inner slut when it’s time to get the MCs knockin’ boots. Everyone will thank you in the end.

Every Time a Bell Rings–ACCEPTED

MLR Press accepted my Christmas short story today! I was so happy and excited, I’ve already sent back my first round of edits. This was a damn good day. :D
